Platinum 100% Whey Review

|

When you are looking at supplements to build muscle, protein shakes and powders are likely to be at the top of your shopping list.

This is because the macronutrient plays a crucial role in the building and repairing of tissues, while it can also aid fat loss.

The benefits of supplementing your diet with protein include…

  • Increased muscle size and strength
  • Improved muscle recovery
  • Fat loss
  • Reduced hunger

Given the fact the body doesn’t store protein, it makes sense to supplement your diet with it, especially when regularly working out.

There are plenty of protein powders available, although the actual content can vary from brand to brand.

MuscleTech’s Platinum 100% Whey, for example, includes a combination of whey protein isolate and whey peptides, along with BCAAs, glutamine and EAAs (essential amino acids).

Platinum 100% Whey is part of the Essentials Series, with the company claiming “ultra-pure whey protein never tasted this good”.

The company

MuscleTech was initially set up as a mail order business in 1995 but it has quickly grown to become one of the market leaders in sports nutrition.

MuscleTech, which is part of the Canada-based Iovate Health Sciences International, has a range of products, including the Performance Series and the SX-7 Series.

Iovate is “dedicated to researching, developing, and producing quality, innovative, and effective nutritional supplements that enhance the performance and quality of life for our customers” – with the company going on to win various awards over the years.

Ingredients and how they work

Each 34g serving of Platinum 100% Whey includes 24g of protein, 5.5g of BCAAs, 11.6g of EAAs and 4g of glutamine and precursor.

In total there are 18 different amino acids contained with Platinum 100% Whey and these will serve a variety of different roles within the body. These include aiding protein synthesis, boosting energy, combating fatigue, reducing cravings and aiding growth.

Glutamine (of which there is the largest dose of amino acid) has been shown to aid performance during endurance exercise as well as stimulating protein synthesis in the gut. There are also large doses of aspartic acid, leucine and lysine.

Whey protein is absorbed quicker by the body, with isolates containing less fat, no lactose and mixing more effectively. Platinum 100% Whey also includes whey protein concentrate – although the ratio to isolates is unclear.

MuscleTech also reference to a clinical study on their website, where whey protein was found to help test subjects build lean muscle and increase their strength.

Platinum 100% Whey side effects

There are no reported side effects to taking whey protein. MuscleTech do list on their packaging, though, that you should speak with your doctor “if you have a medical condition or are taking any prescription medications” and to “stop use and discuss with your physician if any negative effects occur”.

Platinum 100% Whey pros and cons

Pros

  • Mixes well
  • Additional BCAA
  • Good percentage of protein per serving
  • Low fat content

Cons

  • At a slight higher price point than its rivals
  • Mixed reviews over taste despite awards

Platinum 100% Whey review conclusions

Platinum 100% Whey will certainly appeal to those looking to supplement their diet with a quality protein.

It is packed with good stuff, with a strong amino acid profile supporting the whey protein blend of isolates and peptides. The amount of protein you get per serving is also pretty decent (24g per 34g serving), although it is less than you will find in Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard.

There are a few flavors to choose from and they generally have a good taste – the one consistent complaint seems to be with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup (too much chocolate, not enough peanut butter).

The fact it largely contains isolates means that it mixes well with very little effort.

It is a nice touch to see Platinum 100% Whey reference a clinical study, although a number of protein companies could use the research to support their products as well.
